NICEA is an organization that meets monthly to discuss some of the essentials of the UMC’s distinctive Wesleyan heritage and how they can be sustained with in the NIC. The following is an excerpt from NICEA: What it Is and What It Holds as Central: "NICEA is a multi-ethnic organization of United Methodist laity and clergy of Northern Illinois which meets on a monthly basis. Meetings are open to all interested persons. NICEA is made up of individuals who hold similar opinions around several key issues facing the church. Beyond these similar views the ideas of participants are quite diverse. Basic agreement around the following three topics forms the center of the NICEA consensus: The Centrality of the Bible: …Consistent with Par. 78 of The United Methodist Book of Discipline: "United Methodists share with other Christians the conviction that scripture is the primary source and criterion for Christian doctrine." … Theology: The members of NICEA understand Our Doctrinal Standards in The United Methodist Book of Discipline and the Apostles Creed to be valid expressions of Christian theology and quite relevant to the present age. . . . Ethics: There is much to do in the church’s engagement with the world. The United Methodist Social Principles provide the challenging outline for our tasks . . ." A typical agenda would be related to sharing prayer concerns, discussion of significant upcoming events, such as the NIC Annual Conference meeting in early June, and distribution of items of interest. NICEA usually meets on the first Saturday morning of each month from 9:30 to noon If you are interested in information about NICEA, please contact Jim Blue at JamesBlue@aol.com. |
